When I started writing this blog I was planning to write about interesting events and trips as well as my hobbies. However, being extremely lazy I never found time to write about the major trips and most interesting places I went to. So, starting today, I'm going to post a number of short stories about selected events that I failed to share in the past. The main reason I'm doing this is to keep the memories alive (for me obviously). I'm doing it through my photographs and my "notes".
Today I'm writing about the most recent event, a one-day trip to San Antonio. I fell in love with this beautiful city in 2002 when I first visited it. It was love at first sight. I lived there for a year and couldn't dream of anything better. Even though I visited many other exceptionally picturesque places after that, San Antonio remains one of the top ones of my list of favourites. This time we spent all day at the Riverwalk - the biggest attraction of downtown SA. I took many pictures and will insert some the best shots (neutral, w/o people). Even though we spent hours walking along the river, I don't think we saw even half of it. What is River Walk? I would call it the Venice of Texas. Millions of people visit the River Walk each year to enjoy this unusual urban sanctuary that winds along the San Antonio River, one story below the bustling street level. A lock and dam system, the only one in Texas, overcomes a 9-ft. rise in elevation. Restaurants, galleries and shops line the banks of the downtown River Walk while the north and south banks of the River are less commercial and thus quiet and peaceful. The magnificent landscapes, old-fashioned pathways, tinkling waterfalls, quiet pools, outdoor art and relaxing outdoor patios remind Europe a lot. You can pick up a river taxi at convenient stops along the River Walk. The Rio Taxi drivers have tickets on board that you may purchase, or you may purchase them in advance at a ticket location.You may also explore the River Walk's downtown section aboard a river cruiser. You'll learn about San Antonio's rich history from a professional storyteller who is also the boat captain. It's a great way to learn more about San Antonio and its famous River Walk. I've done it in the past, not this time...
Dozens of cafes, bistros and elegant restaurants line the River Walk's downtown central stretch with riverside patios, with heaters in the colder months and mists in the warmer months. Choices range from affordable to upscale and pricy restaurants. We also had our lunch on the river at one of the Italian restaurants (can't remember the name).
More interesting information here. I also couldn't resist taking picture of flowers growing along the river.I love coming back to San Antonio again and again. There are many other interesting places there besides River Walk, but I'll write about them some other time.

Вчора зранку отримала я приємний сюрприз - нагороду від Сянки з блогу "Життя прекрасне". Дуже дякую! Мені, звичайно, страшенно приємно, але відразу кажу - виконати всі умови я не можу. Як правило, я стою осторонь таких штук, тому передавати далі нагороду не буду (я впевнена, що люди яким би я хотіла її передати, вже отримали її не раз). Однак, одну умову я таки виконаю - розповім декілька цікавих фактів про себе (правда, не обіцяю, що вони будуть дуже цікавими)

Отже, поїхали

• Маю вдома черепаха, який живе у великому акваріумі, а також декілька десятків черв'яків та риб, яких ми вирощуємо на корм для нього.
• Ми з чоловіком часто ходимо на довгі прогулянки; в основному в парки - як міські, так і національні. Дуже хочемо відвідати всі національні парки в США і якомога більше за межами країни. На даний момент серед найцікавіших поїздок в парки (які ми вже відвідали) можу назвати екваторіальні ліси в Пуерто Ріко та нац. парк дерев Джошуа в Каліфорнійській пустелі.
• Обожнюю кататись на велосипеді і ходити в гори. І, звичайно, подорожувати (але хто ж не любить?)
• Я поганий танцюрист і ще гірший кухар (добре, що маю золотого чоловіка, який любить куховарити).
• Навчилась сяк-так плавати коли мені було 17. Люблю воду, але плавати ходжу рідко, хоч і басейн прямо перед хатою)))
• Мій чоловік "вкрав" мене в мого колишнього нареченого. І добре зробив!
• Я страшенна лінтяйка (роблю все в останню хвилину). Але ніколи не залишаю справу незавершеною.
• Не люблю скрапбукінг, але обожнюю листівки ручної роботи. Малою постійно дарувала всім родичам саморобні листівки, аж поки мені хтось не сказав, що вони негарні... Поновила хоббі лише рік тому.
• Дуже люблю канцелярські вироби. Не пройду мимо гарного блокнота чи зошита. Збираю папки.
• Коли мені було 15, брала участь в одному конкурсі і виграла безкоштовний рік навчання "по обміну" в США. Жила в прекрасному місті Сан Антоніо в штаті Техас. Відтоді життя декілька разів повертало мене туди, аж поки не прийшлося переїхати назовсім. Техас і далі залишається моїм улюбленим штатом.
• Я професійний студент. Кожен навчальний заклад, в якому я коли-небудь вчилась (включаючи школу та університет), закінчила з відзнакою. От цим я навіть горжуся.

*Бонус* Цей факт всім відомий, але для мене грає велику роль:
Завжди думала було б цікаво навчитися працювати з глиною та гончарним кругом. Нарешті мрія втілилась в життя і тепер маю повну хату кераміки:))

Today I'd like to share two pieces that are among my favourite ones. I spent hours and hours making and then glazing then. This piece I handbuilt some time in spring (half a year ago). It's been sitting on the shelf for months and I couldn't make up my mind how I'm supposed to glaze it. I spent several hours carving those flowers (they are on both sides) and wanted to make an accent on them. This is high fire clay, which means no bright colours! But I wanted those roses to be red! I kept testing various glazes and combinations and finally found a red glaze that doesn't burn out in the kiln! Well, I'm very satisfied with my result. Trust me, the vase is even prettier in reality than it is in the picture.
After my success everyone started using that glaze in high fire and soon it was gone. Thus, improbability of duplicating this pieces makes it even more unique. I'm definitely keeping it for myself!
The second vase isn't handbuilt, it's made on the pottery wheel. I spent hours glazing it, so it deserves appreciation. I like carving a lot, but when the piece is bisqued and it's time to glaze it, I'm always lost. I'd like the design to be noticeable, explicit, but this is hard to achieve, because high fire glazes aren't brushed on, the pieces are dipped in the glaze. So I started experimenting again. I tried new glazes: applied them with the brush, then carefully applied wax resist on painted design only, and then finally dipped the whole piece in white glaze. Hours of work for such a small piece. Well, I like it and everyone else seems to like it too. Do you?

Я ніколи не каталась на роликах. Знаю, звучить дивно, бо майже в кожного підлітка була "роликова фаза". У мене були лише книги:) Так от, декілька днів тому одна моя хороша подруга таки витянула мене на ролики. Ідея прийшла коли місяць тому я організувала "похід" на каток. Нам настільки було весело, що ми вирішили наступного разу йти на ролики. Місце це надзвичайно близько від нашого нового дому, а подруга приїхала аж з сусіднього містечка, тому гріх було відмовлятися.
Дивлячись на те що я ніколи не стояла на роликах, я вирішила взяти з собою коханого...для "страховки". Чоловік мій також ніколи на таких не їздив, але він їздив на roller blades, тому йому було легше. Через хвилин 10 він вже спокійно їздив. Зі мною було складніше. Спочатку їздила по коврику, потім за руку з чоловіком, потім біля стінки, і нарешті сама...сяк-так. Мене вразило, що витворяли інші, профі. Були і танці, і стрибки, і всілякі викрутаси, майже як фігурне катання! До кінця вечора я вже трохи їздила і навіть підтанцьовувала під музику (фото збоку). Було весело, треба буде обов'язково повторити.
Ця подія підштовхнула нас наступного дня піти подивитися фільм "Whip it", який ми не мали наміру дивитися до того. Фільм непоганий, дивитися можна. Це перша робота Дрю Берімор в ролі режисера. Роль головної героїні виконує Еллен Пейдж, яку багато хто знає завдяки стрічці "Juno", де вона дуже вдало зіграла вагітну дівчину-підлітка (ще один фільм, який я раджу всім подивитися). Частина подій "Whip it" відбувається в нашому (вже майже рідному) Остіні. Декілька сцен знімали там же, куди ми ходили кататись на роликах. Що мені не сподобалося, так це те, що самому місту приділили 0 уваги. Наше місто чудове, його всі люблять (столиця як не як!), а після перегляду фільму можна подумати, що нічого особливого тут немає. В одній зі сцен десь далеко видніється центр, потім відразу показують забитий старий склад, який портить всю картину. Ну що тут зробиш, фільм не про Остін...
Наступного тижня знов ідем на каток (він також дуже близько він нашого дому)

Few weeks ago I had a chance to go to the Clay Fest in Gruene, TX. I'd been waiting for this event with great anticipation. This annual festival attracts both pottery lovers and pottery makers. Well-known potters from all over Texas get together for 2 days in order to sell their products and share their experiences and ... techniques!
I personally wasn't interested in buying pottery - I have too much of my own stuff at home. I was going to get ideas and watch demos. There were 4 stages set up and every hour or so famous potters were showing their demos for the audience. It was literally impossible to see all the demos, so I had to choose my priorities. I went on Sunday only (and thus missed Saturday demos), it's an hour drive from Austin and I didn't want to go by myself and ended up getting a ride with a friend of mine.
I'm happy I got to see some of the very interesting demos. Here are some of the pictures.

Dee Buck (he a his wife are famous potters who have a permanent pottery shop in Gruene; their daughter Claire is a friend of mine who, besides pottery, makes very cool jewelry). More Buck's pottery here
I was amazed how quick and easy he made it look like. I know (from personal experience) that it's NOT EASY, making pottery on the wheel is very hard! I guess decades of practice helps a lot:)

I was surprised to find out that most of the artists who do pottery for a living have bacherlor's and master's in Fine Arts or Ceramics. They are intelligent, well-educated and at the same time very laid-back people, enjoying their life. In order to choose pottery as your main occupation, one must be completely devoted to it. There's no way you would make a fortune by being a potter. Pottery must be your heart and soul.

Next artist is Rachel Norris. She demonstrated how to make some functional ware, namely thrown rectangular baking dish. She also threw several pitchers and a plate, and demonstrated adding raised surface decoration from the inside out. More of her work here
Carl Block is famous for his face jugs (the first picture below). He's a very funny guy, who's joking non-stop and making funny faces. For more of his jugs, go here
Diana Seidel demonstrated making different kinds of lids, flanges and galleries. I have a pleasure to see this artist quite often, since she's from Austin. More than that, she teaches at the pottery studio I go to. I've seen similar demonstration before, but I love lids and couldn't miss a chance to see the process again. Here Mark Epstein is demoing several of his handbuilt pieces. He kept saying his pieces always lean forward because that's what we do when we get old. And the work of an artist is often a mirror image of himself. I'm in love with handuibling (even though I've been mainly throwing lately), so I had to check out his other works. Besides the demos, I had a pleasure of looking at various potters' works. I wish I could hold it all in my memory, but unfortunately, the amount of insanely remarkable items was too overwhelming to consume and digest:) I'm too polite to go and take pictures openly (the purpose of taking those pictures would be too obvious). But I did take several pictures of the tents with pottery to give y'all an idea of how it was to be there. Amazingly enough, I took 0 pictures of me and my friends:)

Я страшенно люблю коробочки. А ще люблю осінь, особливо кольорове листя. Малювати я не вмію, тому приходиться ліпити свої "шедеври" з глини. Задум зробити велику коробочку з'явився досить давно. Ось що з цього вийшло (малюнок збоку). До речі, мій найперший глиняний виріб - також коробочка. Вона досить мала і я її досі не наважилась показати. Не показую тому що з нею трапилась неприємна пригода і на даний момент вона нефункціональна.

Сьогоднішня коробка мені ДУЖЕ подобається. З кришечками такого типу часто виникає проблема: вони щільно не прилягають. Так сталось і цього разу. Тому я довгий час думала зробити з цієї коробки вазон (просверливши дірочку на дні), а кришку просто викинути. Але передумала і залишила її так як є. В такому вигляді вона унікальна, має свою цікаву "особистість".

В мене збереглися фото з процесу виготовлення, тому весь сьогоднішній допис присвячую цьому єдиному виробу. Зроблена коробочка, звісно, вручну, не на гончарному крузі. Робила її давно, але от придумала як розфарбувати лише декілька тижнів тому. Дуже хотілося відтворити "дерев'яну" поверхню.

I decided it would be easier to show my pottery in groups, especially since the pieces I'm going to show are very small. Here are some of the earlier "wheel" pieces made mostly as practice.
1.  Cup with lid
I decided to learn how to make lids that fit:) and didn't come up with anything better than putting a lid on a cupThe cup is small, 10.5 cm tall. The glazes didn't turn out how I wanted them to, will know for the future not to use this combination on this particular type of clay.
2. The second cup is more decorative. It has a lid and two tiny handles. I like it a lot. This one is 12 cm tall.
 
I like the way it looks but haven't figured out the functional purpose of this piece.
3. Another "magic box". This time I didn't break the lid. It's tiny (9 cm tall), but cute. A friend of mine suggested to use it for sugar cubes.

Note: the lids for the first two pieces are thrown separately. The third piece is thrown as a closed form; then the lid is "cut off" and trimmed to fit the bottom.

День народження пройшов, пора підводити підсумки. Подарунки мене цього разу порадували - від прикрас до дерев'яної статуетки ручної роботи з Кенії! А підсумок такий: хочу поділитися одним незвичним подарунком. Я великий фанат речей ручної роботи, тому не можу не показати це чудо. Посилка з України прийшла якраз на мій день народження, але мене не було вдома, тому забрала я її з пошти лише через декілька днів. Пошта була закрита на вихідних, тому мені довелося помучити себе здогадками від кого ж той пакунок. 
Коли я побачила адресу на пакунку і його розмір, я відразу засяяла від щастя, зрозумівши що це. Подарунок прийшов від моєї подруги Яни, яка веде тематичний блог про саморобні речі ЗробиСам(а), хоббі, яке переросло в бізнес із успішним відкриттям її магазинчику. Яна зробила для мене міні-альбом і я давно з нетерпінням чекала на нього. Чого я не знала, так це що всередині альбому. Також я не знала, що крім альбому отрмаю ще й одну з її коробочок. До речі, наяву альбом ще кращий ніж на фото!!! Ось вони:Я довго думала що ж там таке може бути в альбомі. Фотографій з Яною в мене не так багато, тому я не знала що ж таке можна вкласти в ті 14 листків!! Коли ми з чоловіком (йому теж було страшенно цікаво) нарешті його розпакували і відкрили, розв'язавши всі бантики, ми були приємно вражені... НАШИМИ ж весільними фотографіями. Чесно, я стояла мало не плакала над цим альбомом, з радості звичайно. Яна вибрала ідеальні фото, ідеально їх розмістила та ідеально прикрасила. Покажу декілька сторінок:
 
І щеКоробочка мені теж дуже сподобалась. особливо "ніжки"-перлинки. Туди можна складати прикраси або якісь інші дрібнички. Обожнюю коробочки! Сама наліпила багато з глини:)
 
Знаю, фотографіїї могли бути і кращої якості, але я їх зменшила...набагато, і це трохи вдарило по якості.

От дійшли руки показати ще декілька моїх виробів (з круга).
1. Кружка. Досить зручна у використанні. Довше тримає каву гарячою ніж проста чашка. Це одна з моїх перших робіт на крузі. Починала я вчити з циліндра. Цей цилінд вийшов напрочув вдало, тому і кружечка з нього вийшла хороша.Підставка під гаряче, на якій стоїть кружка, ще зі старих запасів. Зроблена вручну. Так я випробовувала нову техніку. Візерунок зроблено використавши 2 види глини, а не фарби. Техніка мені не дуже сподобалась, тому більше її не використовувала.

2. Це повинна була бути magic box,  - так ми в студії називаємо такий вид шкатулочок. Зроблено на крузі. Робиться закрита форма, верх пізніше обрізається і виходить баночка з кришечкою. Кришечку я розбила (я розбила не одну річ). Тому результат - проста баночка для дрібничок. Трохи експериментувала з кольорами, хотіла перевірити чи вигорять. Рожевий вигорів, решта залишились. Фіолетовий став синім. З керамікою ніколи не вгадаєш що вийде з печі :)

#1 My very first piece made on the wheel. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of it from the first stages of making, only the finished bowl. Yes, unlike my handbuilt pieces, it's perfectly round!#2 is one of my later bowls, it's bigger than the fist one. Both are perfect for late ice-cream snack :)#3 is a small casserole, half handbuilt, half thrown on the wheel. The bottomless cylinder is thrown on the wheel, and changed into a desired shape; bottom, feet and handles are attached later.

Минулого тижня ми з Енді відсвяткували річницю нашого весілля (не плутати з річницею одруження). Так, рік тому, 28 вересня, ми вдруге обмінялися клятвами перед величезною кількістю свідків, нафотографувалися, відсвяткували цю знаменну подію з родичами та друзями, і згодом відправилися у весільну подорож в Пуерто Ріко, о. Св. Томаса та о. Св. Джона. Весело було...Річницю ми святкували просто. Заздалегідь вирішили піти в той же ресторан, де святкували весілля. Так і зробили. Навіть на десерт замовили кусок такого ж торта що був на весіллі. Подарунками ми вирішила не обмінюватися (я так і не придумала що б таке подарувати дорогому чоловікові). Але я таки зробила для Енді відкритку (фото нижче), а він порадував мене сюрпризом - надзвичайно красивими сережками та кулончиком. Сережки я таки залишила, але цепочку попросила віднести назад в магазин, мотивуючи це тим, що вона перекручувається і лежить нерівно. Насправді ж мене гризла совість: я не заслужила ніякого подарунка, бо тиждень до того попала в маленьку аварію і побила нашу машину. C'est la vie...

This time I'm going to show two more handbuilt pieces.
1. Little triangular vase. I love this piece even though it's so small. I used a new technique in applying a design, it's time-consuming, but the result is fabulous. This is low fire clay. The vase is 10 cm tall.

I already have several pieces made on the wheel, completely finished and ready to be shown. And I even spent several hours taking pictures of my pottery today. However, I'll start with my older handbuilt pieces and will show some of them today. I wouldn't call them disasters but I don't use them at all:)

1. This tray was one of the very first pieces that I made half a year ago when I just started doing pottery. As you can tell from the first picture I made little handles on the sides of it, but while I was sanding the tray I broke one of them. I ended up getting rid of the other one as well (the broken piece couldn't be repaired, it was too fragile).
 
Dimensions: 25 cm x 22 cm. This is low fire clay that's why the colours are bright. Due to the lack of experience or luck, I couldn't get the colour I desired and ended up repainting and refiring the piece several times. Here's the finished tray:

Last weekend I went to the Chocolate Festival. This was the 4th Annual Austin Chocolate Festival, which was held September 18th and 19th 2009 at the Monarch Event Center here in Austin. I knew about it several weeks in advance and hesitated whether I should go or not. But how could I resist? I love chocolate sooooo much!

I also found another challenge for myself - I decided to ride my bike there and then reward myself with sweets. However, the day was too hot and I ended up altering my plan and taking the bus. Why not drive? -  you'd ask. As a reward for biking or riding a bus (as opposed to driving) I received $5 from http://www.oilisdumb.com's table, which covered both my bus pass and part of my $22 fee for the entrance (yes, I like saving money). In return for the fee, I received 16 tickets for samples and a ticket for the competition, which added up to far more chocolate than I could eat in one day.

There were a couple dozen vendors. Everyone was friendly and the vendors were very enthusiastic about explaining their backgrounds and goods. It didn't feel nearly as crowded as I was expecting from the website's ticket limit of 800 people per time block. My favorite were desserts from La Madelaine. I don't go there often, but will be tempted now.

Two hours was more than enough time. I went there with my friends, so we ended up chatting for good half an hour enjoying our treats.  At first I thought 16 tickets wouldn't be enough as some of the samples required two or even three tickets. Amazingly, I felt full after the first few pieces and ended up taking 2 boxes of samples home.

Next year I won't hesitate so much and will definitely go again.

Several weeks ago I happened to go to "Noche Flamenco", a performance featuring Pilar Andujar, professional Flamenco dance artist from Spain. Pilar Andujar and local flamenco dancer Chloe Brevelle performed on a small stage in one of the restaurants downtown Austin with accompaniment of "The Spirit of Flamenco". The songs were in Spanish, so I missed a lot. However, I was totally ecstasized by the dancing. I've never been exposed to flamenco before and knew pretty much nothing about it. It was passionate, even furious, and breathtaking! Unfortunately, I didn't take my camera, so I have no photos or videos from the event.  
I tried to find some videos similar to what I saw myself, but vainly. None of the videos reflect what I saw.

So, what is Flamenco?
In short, Flamenco is a genuine Spanish art, and to be more exact a genuine Southern Spanish art. It exists in three forms: Cante, the song, Baile, the dance, and Guitarra, guitar playing. Gipsies are very often named as the fathers of Flamenco, and at least it can be taken for certain that they played an important part in its creation. But also the popular songs and dances of Andalusia (a region, autonomous community in Spain) have influenced early Flamenco considerably.

 Давненько я не показувала своєї кераміки. Руки не доходять сфотографувати. Я раніше ретельно вела облік всіх виготолених мною речей, але останнім часом зовсім забула і за останній місяць не можу сказати скільки всього зробила (а ліплю я багато). Як і більшості любителям гончарної справи, мені подобається сам процес виготовлення, а от вирішувати проблему з фарбуванням і перефарбовуванням - каторга.
Менше з тим... Досі не можу показати нічого, зробленого на гончарному крузі. Але ще маю декілька виробів з ручної ліпки. Сьогодні покажу одну із моїх улюблених робіт. Це блюдо, підносик, тареля (називайте як хочете) і моя корзинка поки що є моїми найулюбленішими виробами.
 
Так от, це була спроба №2 зробити тарілку для чіпсів і салси (спроба №1 тут, нефункціональна). На цей раз посудина вийшла дуже навіть функціональна, але використовую її здебільшого для фруктів. Посередині наливаю сметанний соус до фруктів, а самі фрукти розкладаю по боках. Сьогодні без соусу, лише фрукти:
 
І трохи про сам виріб:
Розміри - 25х25 см
Глина - high fire (а значить виріб можна ставити в духовку, мікрохвильовку, посудомийну машинку і т.д.)
Піднос тримають 4 ніжки (на фото не видно). Візерунок викарбувано (так, потратила дуже багато часу), а після обпалення наведено пензликом. "Розмитий" ефект фарби завдяки використанню спеціальної техніки (розголошувати не буду).

Цього тижня свій день народження святкували двоє хороших і дорогих мені людей. Тому маю дві нові листівки. Перша листівка відправилась у мій рідний Франик до моєї хорошої подруги Олічки, з якою ми дружимо з третього класу. Не знаю чи дійшла вчасно, (ніколи не довіряю пошті), але відправила листівку я досить давно. Друга листівка для ще однієї майже рідної мені людини. До адресата вона дійшла, імениннику сподобалась (про це він мені повідомив сам). Значить місію виконано.
